I think its interesting that the motion, when I squint at this, shows a lower frequency repetition of the diagonal x-pattern that is not evident in the static image.

Yes, I like that too. There's no apparent way to make the low frequency more prominent, besides squinting (low spatial frequency filter). It would be cool to do this on a larger scale, maybe a stadium Jumbotron.
When I get some time I'll modify the code to do more rules (limited to 4 currently), which will allow analogous patterns with more frames, more spatial frequencies involved.
I'm fine, was visiting my parents in Walnut Creek with the kids for a few days. A hot drive with no air conditioning, found several nice places to swim along the Smith River and along Hwy 101.
