The first task in adapting the booktree module for more generalized text-tree viewing purposes will be adapting it to function properly with firefox. Currently it only displays indented trees when viewed with internet explorer.

Are you sure? I see a perfect tree in IE, Firefox, Safari.

I used firefox 2.0 and all was Ok, Now I use Firefox 3.0 and i see all correcty.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will likely not be doing much code tinkering and will focus on the use of existing established component tools or web services which have a particular feature for future development.
On a related topic here's a nice java desktop program called VUE which has many of the features that I would like to ideally have in an online collaborative environment. I would like to see more compelling node visualization modes which would allow linking of multiple individuals node trees/users and perhaps 3d tree viewing
